Today words like
vision, mission statement, goal setting and dreams are used
interchangeably and thrown around quite casually. This makes the
process of personal growth confusing and allows us to avoid the
real work of growing. Therefore, I believe it is very important
to define terms clearly and use them consistently. I hope the
following explanation and chart can clarify these statements.
A vision is a
picture of where you want your life to be sometime in the
future. Close your eyes and in your mind draw an imagine of the
perfect life. What kind of work would you do, who would you know
and what would your family and circumstances look like.
Your mission
statement is a one sentence statement of the picture you just
drew. It is much easier to speak one sentence.
Your dreams are
the 5 or 6 things you must do to fulfill your mission statement
and make the vision come true. That is why I say follow your
dreams they tell you who you are.
Goals are simply
the items you must do to make your dreams come true. If you wish
to be a millionaire you need to set a goal of saving $100 a
month, earning 10% for 45 years.
If you need to
break down the goals further you can do it with objectives and
tasks. The whole purpose is to break the major vision of your
life into easy steps you can begin taking today.
